All About FilGrad

Fil-Grad, short for Filipino Graduation Celebration, is an intimate graduation ceremony, as opposed to the commencement ceremony for your college where the presence of hundreds of other students seems to devalue your fifteen seconds of fame on stage. With a lesser amount of participants in Fil-Grad, you have the opportunity to have a more personal graduation that honors the hard work and dedication that you put into this wonderful, yet tumultuous journey that is college. One of the best known parts of Fil-Grad is the chance to deliver a short speech to address the various figures and experiences that had a great impact in your life. The joy of graduating and being around family watching and friends in gowns alongside of you creates a strong aura of pride, honor, and success. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Freeborn Hall on the UC Davis Campus at 5pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be Filipino to participate?

This event is not limited to Filipinos. It is for anyone who identifies with the community. Fil-Grad exists because every community is unique and as a Filipino community, this serves as a space to gather and share our culture as we celebrate our graduation.

How can I get involved?

If you are interested in helping to plan Fil-Grad 2009, please contact one of the coordinators saying that you're interested and we will send you more information soon! No obligation if you sign up. The planning of Fil-Grad has just begun and everyone's input is important and welcome. This is your graduation, and we want to cater to your needs and wants as much as possible! Help us to make your Fil-Grad the best that it can be. =]

Where do the fees go?

The fees go to various necessities to make FilGrad the best it could be. No profit is made whatsoever. The fees are allocated to purchase stoles, seniors gifts, venue, socials, etc.

What can I benefit from participating in Fil-Grad?

Participating in Filipino Graduation Celebration, gives you a more intimate celebratory event, in which you can recognize and celebrate your accomplishments through your collegiate career with your friends and family. Fil-Grad also gives you a chance to participate in a graduation celebration with your fellow senior friends, whom you may not necessarily be able to participate in the same commencement with.

How many "tickets" am I allocated?

Participating student will be allowed be bring as many guests as they please, which therefore means they will be allocated as many tickets as needed.

Why is this different from the college graduation?

As stated previously, the Filipino Graduation Celebration offers a different venue and atmosphere from that of the UC Davis commencements, in which it has more of a family and friend appeal that is not often seen in commencement ceremonies.

What is the commitment like?

The time commitment to participate in Fil-Grad is not tedious or time consuming at all. Although we do require our participants to attend 2 Fil-Grad socials and 1 Fil-Grad planning meetings, the requirements are meant to further develop the bond between the graduating students. We may also need participants on a few Saturdays, more toward the event date, for possible rehearsals and photo shoots.

I still have a quarter left in the fall, can I still participate in Fil-Grad?

By all means YES! Even if you have two quarters left, or maybe even if you graduated one quarter early, we encourage you to participate in what truly is a once in a lifetime event.
